1. Family

Pavlos Omiros was born in Smyrna in 1799. He was the son of Georgios Omiros, a professor of the "Philological Gymnasion" of Smyrna, and of Magdalini Kourmouzi. One of his ancestors, who also had the same name with him and was an interpreter of the English consulate of Smyrna, was the first member of the family who settled in Smyrna in 1632.1 Their children founded the branches which perpetuated the name of the family. The members of the Omiros family which bore the birth name Pavlos were many during the 18th and mainly during the 19th century, thus it is not always easy to precisely tell to which of them available evidence in the archives and studies refer to.

2. Career

In 1821, after the beginning of the Greek War of Independence, Pavlos Omiros with his parents found shelter in Marseilles. He decided, however, to take part in the revolution under the orders of the French major Favier.2 In 1830 he returned to Smyrna. He became a financier and gained a great fortune, which he invested in a mine of argentiferous lead in the environs of Smyrna.3 He bought a house in the European quarter of Smyrna, the most expensive area of the city. Pavlos Omiros played an important role in the life of the Greek Orthodox community of Smyrna.4 It is reported that he was a notable (dimogerontas) of the community in 1872. During the years 1835-1837 he was the ephor of the school "Evangeliki Scholi" of Smyrna and of the Philological Museum. He was a benefactor of the “Company for the diffusion of the Greek letters in Asia Minor”.5 He died unmarried on 28th March 1889 in his house in Smyrna from apoplexy.

Favier was a French general and a Philhellene. He arrived in Greece in the beginning of 1825 and assumed the command of the fourth tactical army, which was stationed in Nauplion. He took part in many important battles of the war of the Greek independence.
